AI assistants are useful for exactly the work small professional offices do all day: summarising long files, drafting letters, finding the one paragraph that matters. The obstacle is that the files belong to patients and clients. Pasting them into a public cloud service is a decision many clinics, law offices and accounting firms are not free to make.
What "private AI" means
Private, or local, AI runs the model on hardware you control, inside your own network. Documents, questions and answers never leave the building. Nothing is sent to a vendor's servers and nothing is used to train someone else's model. It is the difference between hiring an assistant who works in your office and mailing your files to an agency.
What it can do today
- Search and summarise your own documents in plain language.
- Draft letters, notes and reports from your templates.
- Answer staff questions from manuals and procedures.
- Keep working when the internet connection is poor, which matters on farms and shop floors.
It will not match the largest cloud models on every task. For most office work on your own files, it does not need to.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Where does the model run, and can the vendor show that nothing leaves your network?
- Who can see the prompts and the answers?
- What happens when the hardware fails, and who supports it?
- How does it fit the confidentiality rules of your profession? Ask your own compliance adviser; a vendor's promise is not a legal opinion.
